Lao Restaurant SapSap Just Opened a Location At 3rd St. Market Hall

SapSap – known for killer fried rice and Lao sausage – is expanding the brand after opening at Zocalo Food Park last year.

SapSap, purveyor of dynamic, delicious Lao-American cuisine, is duplicating itself. Chef Alex Hanesakda has been doing various iterations of this concept in southeastern Wisconsin for years. In 2025, he opened the SapSap food truck at Zócalo Food Park (636 S. Sixth St.). Now, he’s brought the concept to 3rd St. Market Hall (275 W. Wisconsin Ave.). It just opened yesterday (Jan. 20), as a matter of fact.

At this second and (in contrast to the food park) indoor location, Hanesakda is again showing the nuanced and culturally evocative sides of Lao cuisine. SapSap took over the space occupied by In-Yun, a Korean food concept. In so doing, Hanesakda started a partnership with In-Yun’s owners, Ivan and Oscar Rubio Gutierrez, who will assist in running SapSap in the market hall.

The menu offers dishes Hanesakda has become known for, such as Mama’s Eggrolls and brisket fried rice. There’s also a fried rice with crispy Lao-style dill sausage. Beyond them, the menu expands to more of Southeast Asia with pad thai, red curry, drunken noodles and pad krapow (ground pork stir-fried with Thai basil, chiles and garlic, and topped with a fried egg).
