Why I Love Milwaukee: The Parts of Milwaukee We Overlook

Jon Mattrisch accidentally became a part-time professional photographer. All he wanted to do was show off the city he was born in and never wants to leave.

Everyone seems to have this idea that we’re not good enough. That’s part of why I love Milwaukee: We’re so humble we end up ignoring some of our best attributes.

My fiancee and I document a lot of our Milwaukee excursions on Instagram (@livemilwaukee). If we’ve learned anything, it’s that our favorite restaurant is whichever one we haven’t tried yet. There’s always something new here, right next to something old, and I like taking pictures of both of them.

I still get excited every time Wisconsin gets mentioned on TV, whether it’s a national news story or that one time Oak Creek came up on Netflix’s “Iron Fist.” There’s this sense of joy I feel whenever my state gets recognized.

There’s a need for daily reminders of the city we love to overlook. That’s why I started my Instagram, and another Instagram (jmke.visuals), and an Etsy page, and a website.

After work, I enjoy wandering with my camera. Sometimes that leads me to climbing an abandoned ladder on Jones Island or ending up surrounded by concrete underneath an overpass. Through my photography, I want people to see how cool Milwaukee really is.
