Fittingly on this Memorial Day weekend, This Bites (on 88Nine Radio Milwaukee) is taking on one of the foods you probably think of in relation to late spring and summer holidays, and just summer in general: BBQ.
I recently put together a roundup of nine local barbecue joints, for ribs, brisket, pulled pork and the like. They include Double B’s on 74th and Greenfield, which is known for its St. Louis-style ribs and brisket burnt ends, and Heaven’s Table at the East Side food Hall Crossroads Collective. Owner Jason Alston, who once offered his Q on the menu at Mi-Key’s on Jefferson Street, hickory smokes his meat on-site. Those meats are sold by the pound, rack (ribs) and as meat platters. Tarik and I also talk about the classic Speed Queen, for pork shoulder in sauce sopped up with sliced white bread.
The restaurant Centro Cafe might be in your universe. If not, it should be. It’s a great little pasta place on Center Street in Riverwest. Owners Peg Karpfinger and Patrick Moore just opened a bar right next door, called Bar Centro, at 804 E. Center St. It has its own menu of cocktails, beer and cider, and food, as well. Nibbly stuff like cheese and charcuterie plates, spiced nuts, house-marinated olives and soup.
And finally, Tarik makes a plug for some silly summer event called the Malort 5k. Why on earth anyone would want to run that is beyond me. And it’s in Chicago. Tarik better start training now…
