The Cheel Is Finally Back

The Cheel Is Finally Back

The Thiensville restaurant is back in business after the fire that destroyed it three years ago.

Three years after the fire that destroyed Thiensville’s The Cheel (105 S. Main St.), the Himalayan-inspired restaurant is finally back in business. Coming after many months of setbacks that delayed the rebuild, this is very welcome news indeed. Soft-opening hours started Nov. 8. and will continue throughout this month, leading up to a grand opening on Friday, Dec. 1.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

The last time I talked to Barkha Limbu Daily was a year ago, when she was hoping for a summer 2023 reopening. “We need all the positive juju and prayers we can get,” she said at the time. Fall 2023 isn’t a bad compromise. The reservation site is up and ready and patrons are heading through the door.

Limbu Daily sent me a copy of the menu, which has three (clever) components: tidbits, bigbits and sidebits. The tidbits include lamb or veggie momo, lamb bites and endive boats. Bigbits feature bheda shank lamb, saffron, basmati rice, shan noodles (with veggies, chicken or salmon), poleko macha (grilled Arctic char), truffle filet mignon, and a traditional Nepali dinner with bandel roganjosh (wild boar), poleko kukhura (sizzling chicken), saffron basmati rice, choice of dal, seasonal veggies and a classic dipping sauce. Sidebits range from salad to saffron basmati risotto.

Hours: Tues-Thurs, Kitchen 4-9 p.m., Bar 4-10 p.m.; Fri-Sat, Kitchen 4-10 p.m., Bar 4-11 p.m.

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
