By late fall, this dilapidated corner parking lot will become a new East Side patio.
Milwaukee’s Stone Creek Coffee may have expanded its cafes to Madison and Chicago, but it’s also continuing to spread its footprints in our city. Case in point: The East Side’s Downer Avenue, which is the site for a Stone Creek location expected to open in late fall of this year. Stone Creek already has one East Side location in Shorewood.
Co-owner Eric Resch says he’s had his eye on this corner for over a decade, as he once lived on Downer Ave himself.
“For years we watched as the street changed,” Resch says via pres release. “The old bank site is an important anchor of this street, and it has been empty for a long time. We are excited to rehab this corner and make it awesome.”
The rendering (shown above) shows a very strong outdoor component to the rehabbed storefront (the former Associated Bank, 2650 N. Downer Ave., at Park Place). Resch describes the endeavor as “reinventing an iconic corner” — one that lends itself well to a coffee patio. The cafe will capitalize on the outdoor component by having walk-up service accessible from the sidewalk. Resch and his partners are again working with LP/w Design Studios, which handled the design of both the Radio Milwaukee cafe (158 S. Barclay St.) and the new Tosa location (7954 Harwood Ave.) expected to open this summer.
