In April, we covered the @CityofMilwaukee Twitter handle that’s run not by city government officials, but by the Newaukee young professional group. This month, we look to a Republican state senator who attracted online imitators during the Act 10 fight – and still deals with the machinations today as he runs for Congress. Glenn Grothman, the quotable social and fiscal conservative from West Bend, prodded 35-year incumbent Tom Petri into retirement earlier this year in an impressive show of clout. But good luck finding his official Twitter account.

Some three fake ones, all begun in early 2011, pollute more pertinent search results. @GlennGrotham (“I Hunt Bears & am tidy”) has railed against the sliming of the state Capitol by protesters.

@Sen_Grothman tweeted a photo of a child holding a protest sign and commented, “Someone needs to put these worthless kids back to work.” And @glenngrothman (“Out here grindin’”) has repeatedly accused protestors of untidiness, calling them “slobs,” as Grothman once did on MSNBC.

Brandon VerVelde, communications director for the Grothman camp, accuses “liberals” of posting “vile and false statements” about the state senator, although Grothman hasn’t asked Twitter to take down the accounts. Its policies call for parody accounts to flag themselves as fictitious, and those poking fun at the Republican have not.

“The Grothman campaign is not focused on fake Twitter accounts,” VerVelde says, noting the official feed is
@GrothmanforWI.

“We are focused on reaching out to voters and sharing Glenn’s message.”
