1. Broccoli Cheddar

LOUP | 7505 HARWOOD AVE., WAUWATOSA

Hearty but not too heavy, it features chunks of broccoli florets and carrots in a smooth base of Wisconsin sharp cheddar with a hint of Parmesan.

2. Roasted Red Pepper With Smoked Gouda

ALLY’S BISTRO AND POWERHOUSE CAFE | N72 W13350 LUND LN., MENOMONEE FALLS + 10460 W. INNOVATION DR., WAUWATOSA

The smoky cheese toggles with the sweetness of the red pepper in this glossy, velvety creation.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Brazilian Seafood Chowder

AMARANTH BAKERY & CAFE | 3329 W. LISBON AVE.

Loosely based on Brazilian moqueca, this interpretation – filled with shrimp and bell peppers in rich coconut milk broth – is refined and bewitching.

4. Chicken in the Pot

BENJI’S DELI |  4156 N. OAKLAND AVE., SHOREWOOD + 8683 N. PORT WASHINGTON RD., FOX POINT

The inclusion of half of a chicken makes this no standard chicken soup. Carrots, matzo balls and skinny egg noodles take it to the top.

5. Khao Poon

VIENTIANE NOODLE SHOP | 3422 W. NATIONAL AVE.

This Laotian specialty is a feast of chicken, thin rice vermicelli, bamboo shoots and other veg in a deep, intricate red curry base. Toppings like cilantro, dried chiles and fresh lime complete it.

6. Ukrainian Borscht

WIOLETTA’S POLISH MARKET | 3955 S. HOWELL AVE.

Red beets lend this Eastern European classic its vivid hue. Chunks of root vegetable and kidney beans make the Ukrainian version satisfyingly hearty.

7. Pozole Verde

GUADALAJARA | 901 S. 10TH ST.

The Mexican chicken-hominy stew gets its base color from tomatillos and green chiles. The final touch is a slew of toppings, such as sliced radish, onions, cabbage and fresh lime juice.
