Dak duBois’ new EP, The mkE Project, focuses on the collaborative spirit of Milwaukee’s tightly knit music scene.
The Oshkosh native and “jam” aficionado fell in love with Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood, prompting him to relocate there. He formed strong ties with established artists like Wave Chapelle and Klassik, who are featured on the EP.
The mkE Project is a self-proclaimed “testament” to that local collaboration. – Erin Wolf

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!
How did you get your musical name?
My full name is Dakota Bradley Wright. [Dak] is short for “Dakota.” The “duBois” part – I had some friends that have passed away in the last few years from addiction and mental health problems; the name is to pay homage to the people that I’ve lost. In French, it means “of wood,” and that’s kind of the resting place of all things – the rebirth of new carbon atoms.
What’s next for you?
I want to do more collaborative pieces. But I think another [solo] album is on the horizon, too. I think it’s so important to just support creativity in any way – who knows where it’s going to lead?
