Ready to roam Riverwest among the rebel Oss’stera and Brochen witches working to resist the imperial reach of the Vollen Empire? Based on the lore of Argren, a fantasy world built by local author Ross Hightower, the neighborhood’s Argren Faire continues to grow in its third year. The family-friendly ren faire near Black Husky Brewing (909 E. Locust Ave.) is free for folks to find food, fantasy and fellow faire enthusiasts.
After enchanting readers with tales in the “Spirit Song” series, Hightower and co-author Deb Heim brought the first Argren Faire to life in 2024. “Our fantasy books are about peaceful people rising up against oppression,” says Heim. “The theme is ‘Always Faire, Always Free,’” she adds, with a vibe that’s “artistic and also very community oriented.”

Argen Faire will feature a makerspace, performances by Milwaukee Irish Dance Studio and micro pop-up storytelling with Ex Fabula. Oh, and keep your eyes open for witches turning the tables on Malleus the Inquisitor, as live role-playing theater often surfaces.
Come as you are, or dress to impress; knights in armor, mermaids and kings are not uncommon sights. You can also expect turkey legs, local vendors, a costume contest, a beard contest and even “Feats of Strength.” Argren Faire will run from noon-8 P.M. on Sept. 12.
