While his business has only been around since 2005, Don has been experimenting with cameras since he made his first video back in 1972. Instead pursuing his dream after high school he took a job with Laacke & Joys to support his family but eventually his passion for photography returned and he started You Ought To Be In Pictures.
Meeting Don for the first time it’s clear that photography is more than just a job to him. He has created a studio in the back of his home that is professional while at the same time is warm and inviting for potential clients to view samples of his past work. Don prides himself on his laid back attitude and letting couples enjoy their wedding day while he blends into the background to capture every smile and embrace. The result is a stunning set of photos that when paging through an album captures a smooth progression of hidden moments.
Don offers standard wedding photography packages that can include various add-on print packages but what really drew me in was his amazing video editing. With Don behind the eye of the camera and his son shooting the day with video, together they capture your entire day from up to two hours before your ceremony to after you’ve tossed your bouquet and then merge the two into a DVD masterpiece. In Don’s cozy studio, I was able to watch a few segments of some of his recent work. It takes a real artist to be able to combine photos with video so seamlessly. I found myself getting caught up in the photos flashing on the screen and the couples that would then come to life as the video began to play. Don also sets the whole thing to music that changes depending on the mood of the photos. The emotion that gets captured in his work is something that could never be accomplished with a photo album on your coffee table.
And while Don recognizes that his business was started later in his life he certainly has some new ideas up his sleeve. One unique feature that is offered is his red carpet service. Don will provide a custom backdrop, velvet rope and stanchions and of course the red carpet and paparazzi While this service may not be fit for every wedding, it is a fun option for any couple looking to capture special pictures of their guests that differ from the standard dinner table or photo booth photos. Don is also able to create customized backdrops that add an extra wow-factor to cake table photos or any other area of a reception rooms that needs an special touch.
When hiring a photographer and videographer for your wedding it is important to spend the time to meet with the specific person who will be shooting your wedding day. Not only do you need to see examples of their past work, but you also need to make sure that your personalities mesh. With Don, you get a true artist who is passionate about his work and who can create not only gorgeous wedding photos, but a video and custom DVD that let’s you relive your wedding day for many anniversaries to come.
