In 1997, the NBA suspended player Latrell Sprewell for 68 games for choking his Golden State Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo. In 2005, he turned down a three-year, $21 million contract extension from the Minnesota Timberwolves and retired from professional basketball. In 2008, his house was foreclosed. In 2011, the Milwaukee native owed the state of Wisconsin $3.5 million in unpaid income taxes.
On Monday afternoon, the controversy surrounding the 42-year-old was back again. According to the Journal Sentinel, Sprewell was arrested for disorderly conduct after police received a pair of noise complaints about loud music coming from a house on Pleasant Street on Milwaukee’s East Side. He was booked in jail around 4:15 p.m. and rang in the New Year behind bars, TMZ reports. Monday’s complaints came within an hour of each other and followed a series of similar complaints over the previous months.
The four-time NBA All-Star attended Milwaukee’s Washington High School and spent five seasons with the New York Knicks. In 13 seasons he made nearly $100 million.
His reason for turning down that 2005 contract extension? The offer wasn’t money enough to feed his family.
