Captains of INdustri
Walker’s Point’s new INdustri Café lives in a one-time machine shed (524 S. Second St., 414-224 7777). The building (which briefly housed Fuzion Lounge), with plentiful hard wood and exposed brick, dates to the 1890s. It has an industrial history, hence the restaurant’s name. But co-owners Robert Klemm and Chris Miller have a modern perspective on dining. Both have amassed many years of fine dining restaurant experience. Executive chef Miller, who spent a lot of time at that distant memory of a seafood restaurant Moceans, is following an “accessible” culinary model. The topical local emphasis is here. INdustri has become a member of Braise RSA (Restaurant Supported Agriculture). It serves Rishi tea to Rehorst infused vodka. The menu is the same whether you come here at 11:30 a.m. or 7 p.m. Appetizers ($7-$14) include scallops Rockefeller and rumaki with applewood bacon and duck liver. Sandwiches ($8-$13) range from a Monte Cristo to a burger with apple, bacon and smoked Gouda. The entrées are well-immersed in comfort ($12-$34): meatloaf stuffed with Polish sausage, artichoke and wild mushroom pot pie, holiday-style duck breast with stuffing, stout-braised corned beef hash and eggs. Hours: Sun-Wed 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Thurs 11 a.m.-11 p.m.; Fri-Sat 11 a.m.-1 a.m.
The Sun Over Bremen Street
As is probably clear from the breakfast feature I wrote in Milwaukee Magazine’s December 2010 issue, I love the morning meal. Technically, Cafe Corazón is doing weekend brunch. It’s really morning sunshine. Where there’s a red stream of Bloody Marys (and Marias), there’s migas (eggs scrambled with corn tortilla strips, cheese and bacon or chorizo), huevos rancheros, huevos Divorciados (“divorced” eggs – one topped with a green sauce, the other with a red sauce), breakfast burritos and tacos, empanadas with several fillings (pulled beef and onion; cheddar and mushroom) and many other selections. Plus, you can’t beat the Riverwest cafe’s quirky “Day of the Dead”-themed decor. Sat-Sun 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (3129 N. Bremen St., 414-810-3941)
Hearty Meals
Still looking for a place to take your applicable-endearing-term for Valentine’s Day? Time is flying. Start calling. A few more cupid announcements have crossed my desk. At Trocadero, the festivities are happening for the weekend (Feb 11-13). On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, diners get a free glass of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. That’s during dinner only. The couple’s menu offered on Monday, Feb. 14 features a shared appetizer (shrimp on crab cake), two side salads and two surf-and turf entrées ($59.95 per couple). The restaurant will also have brunch specials on Saturday and Sunday.
Is sushi more your thing? Nanakusa (408 E. Chicago St., 414-223-3200) is couple-izing its menu for the big day, Monday. Besides the full menu, the Third Ward Japanese restaurant will have a host of specials-for-two from the sushi bar and kitchen (including steak and steamed scallops). Hours: 5-9 p.m. Call for a reservation.
Look for more Dish on Dining soon.…
