These days, it’s not easy being the Government Accountability Board.
The non-partisan panel, composed of ex-judges, has a lot to contend with: a new voter I.D. law barred from implementation by a sitting Dane County judge’s ruling, a mess of recall elections, and a polarized electorate watching its every move. And not much time has elapsed, remember, since the GAB grappled with a statewide state Supreme Court recount. It’s enough to give Kevin Kennedy a few more gray hairs.
Chief among the GAB’s detractors have been Republicans and other conservatives, who’ve lit up the agency’s new Facebook page, which was intended to spread such salient (and helpful) advice as, “Did you know you can request an absentee ballot from your local municipal clerk’s office?”
In reply, the page has been blanketed with comments like this one, from a Milwaukeean: “Your incredible incompetence in handling the verification, your complete indifference to the tens of thousands of disenfranchised voters, your refusal to be accountable to the taxpayer(s’) questions, your massive waste of taxpayer money, and your obvious partisan biases all should compel you to do the proper thing and immediately resign your positions and refuse the pensions you have done nothing to deserve.”

The GAB’s posted “Facebook Policies” preclude it from responding, although the page provides an email and phone number for initiating more formal dialogue.
