Plus a new Soul Low track is our Stream of the Week.
Your typical punk song maintains a lightning pace, hurling towards the finish line in less than three minutes. Starting this Friday, the first week of the sixth edition of MKE Punk Fest eschews that formula and showcases an excessive amount of music over the coming weekend.
A total of 43 bands are performing over three days at three venues, including The Local (Friday and Saturday night) and Brewed Cafe and Up and Under (Sunday afternoon)—The Local and Up and Under are 21 and over; Brewed Cafe is all ages. The eclectic line-up encompasses the diversity of the genre, featuring artists like glam rockers J and the 9s, garage rockers Tiger Sex, and funk/punk fusion SpaceWaster.
No need to worry if you can’t make it out this weekend; the festival continues with three more days of music over the next two weeks. More information is available at the MKE Punk Fest website. Tickets to each show ranges from nothing to $6; a 7-day pass costs $10. A full schedule of this weekend’s events is provided below:

Stream of the week
Soul Low celebrated the release of its sophomore album, Nosebleeds, last Saturday night at Miramar Theatre. It’s a coming-of-age record that delicately balances the line between adolescence and maturity. One minute singer Jake Balistrieri viscerally struggles through a contemptuous affair and the next he’s flippantly mentioning his “weenie.” The band finds some solid ground between those two extremes on “Finger Bones,” an anxiety-fueled track on the uneasy digital age of relationships.
