This Local Farm Grows Greens With a Purpose

Here’s what makes Hundred Acre Farm’s salad fixings special.

Hundred Acre Farm doesn’t rely on Mother Nature. The 2-year-old company grows leafy greens year-round in a vertical hydroponic (soil-free) farm in Milwaukee’s Century City Business Park.

Addressing food insecurity is a strong part of its mission. Getting healthy food out to as many people as possible is, too. You can find Hundred Acre’s salad blend at Outpost Natural Foods, plus a growing number of local restaurants (like the Kimpton Hotel’s Tre Rivali).

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

Starting Aug. 16, Hundred Acre’s basil also hit the shelves of all Outpost locations and Go Grocer in the Third Ward. By late August, you can also look for the company’s own basil pesto at the same stores.

And there are more green plans in the works, says Hundred Acre’s owner, Chris Corkery. They include building more urban farms and growing more varieties of produce. But back to leafy greens. That wilty stuff you have in your refrigerator crisper? Pitch it.

“No matter what, 52 weeks a year, we are growing fresh produce down the block and were [delivering] it to [stores] within 24 hours of harvest and that lasts for three to four weeks,” says Corkery.
