The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: Oct. 28

Try a veggie burger from Twisted Plants, go trick-or-treating and more this week.

1. Eat a Veggie Burger From Twisted Plants

ANN CHRISTENSON, DINING EDITOR

I hadn’t met a veggie burger in a while. Been eating a lot of meat lately, but I’ve also been awaiting the new West Allis location of vegan restaurant Twisted Plants. And here it is, nice and official: 6202 W. Lincoln Ave. The restaurant is really about (some people’s) vegan fantasies – burgers, fries and shakes. All plant-based. I went for Superbad – a Gardenburger with grilled onions, jalapenos, pepper jack “cheese” and chipotle ranch on a pretzel bun. Good, though a little spicier than I wanted at that moment. This crazy summer-like weather also got me in the mood for lemonade – and my goodness is their free-squeezed strawberry lemonade delicious!

2. See Present Music’s “Holy Lift Off!”

EVAN MUSIL, ARTS AND CULTURE EDITOR

The only thing that makes the Milwaukee Art Museum’s Windhover Hall more stunning is beautiful music. I felt this for myself when I went to Present Music’s season finale “Honest Music” at the museum back in May. Hearing the soaring strings of Steve Reich’s “Duet” while watching seagulls glide over the waves of Lake Michigan was breathtaking. And I’m sure the new piece by Reich’s pioneering minimalist contemporary Terry Riley will deliver a similar sensation when it headlines Present Music’s season opener at MAM on Halloween (Thursday, Oct. 31).

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Donate to the GoFundMe for Cara Corder

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

On Saturday morning, Cara Corder, a bartender in Bay View and an artist, was struck by a car recklessly driving down Kinnickinnic Avenue. Two cars were racing down the road, and both fled, while Cara was left severely injured. Her friends started a GoFundMe to raise money for her medical expenses. The page reads: “Our community wouldn’t be the same without her. … She needs our support to cover her hospital bills, rehabilitation costs, and essential living expenses as she works to heal.” This is terrible to see, and I’d encourage those who can to support the fundraising effort.

4. Check Out This New Video From Garden Home

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

I’m a little late to share this because the editor pick overlords are trying to meter my metal recommendations, but earlier this month Milwaukee-based screamo band Garden Home dropped a killer video to their single “The Worst of It.” Directed by local photographer/videographer Samer Ghani, it features shots of Garden Home pounding out a blistering performance of the song with hanging picture frames as lenses for video effects – all executed in a single, fluid, nearly 4-minute shot. “The Worst of It” is on Garden Home’s self-titled debut album, released in April.
