1. Eat All the Sporkies at the State Fair

I am often unkind to my body. My days are fueled almost exclusively by black coffee, Sour Patch Kids and the growing dread that the truth I’ve staked my life upon is not enough. And yet, nothing has ever quite challenged my stomach lining as much as my attempt last year to eat every single one of the State Fair Sporkies in one sitting. Let me tell you, no man was meant to eat that much fried food in such rapid order. Your insides are turned into a seven-layer salad from hell. But at least it resulted in an amusing article. And yeah, I’m probably going to do it again this year.
2. Grab a Slice at Bella’s Pizza and Caffé

Is Cudahy the new foodie center of the universe? The answer is not really, but there are exciting things happening there in the Cud. Bella’s Pizza and Caffé, which offers straightforward but excellent New York-style slices, opened in February in a no-frills space at 4759 S. Packard Ave. I devoured my $5 slice topped with those perfect little pepperoni cups and briefly considered getting another, but I alas, I was full. Just around the corner at 3506 E. Layton Ave. is the intriguingly named Mexic103 restaurant, home of the soft-serve margarita curiosity that Ann Christenson wrote of in a recent edition of her exclusive Side Dish newsletter. Mexic103 has since added new flavors – blue curaçao coconut lemon, classic vanilla and a swirl of the two – as well as N/A (like, ice cream) options. A slice and a marg sweet treat? Sounds like a good Tuesday night.

3. Watch Ichi The Killer

Looking for a good Friday night watch? The Oriental Theater is hosting a one time screening of Ichi The Killer at 9 P.M., this feature film is part of Milwaukee Film’s Staff Screening series in which the programming is chosen by randomly selected employees of the theater. Ichi The Killer is a 2001 Japanese dark comedy centered around yakuza enforcer Kakihara, who’s on the search for his missing boss. During his travels he unfortunately comes across a man named Ichi, who turns out to be a mass murderer who is more insane than the yakuza’s finest. Blending absurd violence with tasteful comedic beats, Ichi The Killer is a must watch for those who desire a shocking cinema experience. Be warned, this movie is not for the faint of heart, if incessant on-screen violence (that’s kind of funny) isn’t your thing, maybe watch the new Spider-Man movie instead.
4. Fly Me to the Third Ward Moon Festival

Last week, I gazed out the window to take in the luminous miracle that is our Moon. At its fullest, bathing the night in a brilliant white, the saucer in the sky seemed made of porcelain – delicate and precious. I stood in silence and thought to myself: “This would look super cool in the Third Ward.” Some mysterious being – or the Historic Third Ward Association – must have read my mind, because the natural satellite is (sort of) coming to Milwaukee this weekend from Aug. 7-9. Museum of the Moon is an inflatable replica made by British artist Luke Jerram, just a bit smaller than the real thing at 23 feet. It’ll be suspended above Catalano Square, where all sorts of lunar activities will take place. We’re talking concerts from De La Buena, the appropriately named Wisconsin Space Program and moon-inspired performances from Skylight Music Theatre, and the Milwaukee Ballet. Art-making, a mindfulness market and more will be available as well. It sounds like it’ll be a sight to see and not one that comes every month.
