We count down seven shows happening on New Year's Eve in Milwaukee. Plus: The Promise Ring at Cactus Club and more.
There’s little more depressing than spending New Year’s Eve alone—maybe curling up on the couch and binge-watching a season-long marathon of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Don’t be left without a way to celebrate the dawning of 2016 this week. This year it’s really hard not to find a party that suits your needs. Here’s a countdown on what’s happening on December 31.
- Soup Moat and Static Eyes at High Dive, 7 p.m.
Before the night kicks into high gear, get your shot of adrenaline (and maybe a buzz from a few bottles of High Life) with music by punker rockers Soup Moat and Static Eyes at High Dive. The show promises to be over by 9 p.m., so hit this one up before the real partying starts. (701 E. Center St.)
- The Get Down at Turner Hall Ballroom, 9 p.m. ($60-$85)
An old standby, the retro soul dance party The Get Down is held monthly at Mad Planet, but moves to a much larger room for this year-end blowout. Tickets include an open bar of taps, tall boys and rail drinks, a champagne toast, party favors and an ice luge—the final of which, sounds awesome—or upgrade to the VIP package, for an appetizer buffet, free coat check, balcony access and a commemorative laminate. (1032 N. 4th St., PabstTheater.org)
- Stellar Spark 13 featuring GRiZ, Doctor P, Ookay, Artifakts, Brasstracks, Prince Fox, Casey Lee, Nate Derus, Statik and Tista at The Rave, 8 p.m. ($75-$83)
If hanging out with teenagers that just dropped E is your thing (no judgements here), this massive EDM party at The Rave is right up your alley. The 13th edition of Stellar Spark features 40 DJs throughout five different rooms. It truly is a “rave.” (2401 W. Wisconsin Ave., TheRave.com)
- The Living Statues with Midnight Reruns at Lulu Cafe & Bar, 10 p.m. ($15)
Radio Milwaukee’s Band of the Year winner, Living Statues, is joined by one of the year’s most celebrated local bands, Midnight Reruns for a New Year’s double-bill that also features a champagne toast and a late night snack buffet. (2265 S Howell Ave)
- New Year’s Eve Minifest at Company Brewing, 9 p.m. ($10)
A huge line-up of local acts, Minifest features an eclectic group of 10 bands to bring in the New Year, including The Fatty Acids, Zed Kenzo, Surgeons in Heat, Siren, Sat. Nite Duets, Seshat Queen-Tut, Ruth B8r Ginsburg, Rio, The Meat Flowers and gobbinjr. There will also be free Company Brewing beer for an hour starting at 9:30 p.m., a champagne toast at midnight and a late night food menu. (735 E. Center St., CompanyBrewing.com)
- Tigernite with The Bang Bang at Tonic Tavern, 9 p.m. ($10)
What better way to ring in the New Year than jam to the soaring glam rock anthems of Tigernite? Their self-titled debut landed at No. 11 on the best local albums of 2015. It’s truly the feel good record of the year, and it will keep your spirits as we go into the next. (2335 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., TonicTavern.com)
- Breakfast in the Thunderzone featuring Juiceboxxx and Dogs in Ecstasy at High Dive, 4:30 a.m. (FREE)
This ultra-late-night (early morning) event feels like a challenge. Can one stay up until 4:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve to celebrate with Juiceboxxx and Dogs in Ecstasy? The Facebook event listing reassures invitees that this celebration is in fact, “NOT A JOKE.” If you can make it until the early throws of January 1, you’ll be rewarded with free food and free energy drinks to keep you going. (701 E. Center St.)
Stream of the Week
Before The Promise Ring plays a rare New Year’s Eve show at the Metro in Chicago, catch them shake off the stage rust at Cactus Club on Wednesday night. In Chicago, the band will be performing the seminal Midwestern emo record Nothing Feels Good, so expect them to run through the whole album in the small Bay View club. Doors open at 8 p.m, tickets are $10 and there is no opener.
