A Space for Aspiring Brew Masters, and Black Husky’s Impending Opening

Important info for the wannabe brew master, a soon-to-open brewery in Riverwest, and the week’s foamy events.

Barley to Barrel’s Fall Session
The CrafterSpace’s outstanding Barley to Barrel brewery incubator is accepting applications for its second class (July 25-August 12) at BarleytoBarrel.com. The 10-week program is a great way for budding brew masters to learn everything about how the business of making beer works.

I was fortunate enough to attend the launch party that wrapped up the first session in the spring. The group of “students” was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I have no doubt that the program will result in a few new local breweries in the near future.

“I’m extremely excited to bring together a group of aspiring brew masters for our autumn session and move one step closer to opening our own brewing facility,” says John Graham, one of the co-founders of The CrafterSpace.

Barley Pop of the Week
I’m not the biggest fan of smoked beers because if they’re not balanced well, the smokiness can often be overwhelming. The latest New Glarus Thumbprint series beer manages that flavor nicely. Smoke on the Porter has a noticeable smoke taste, but it works very well with the rich toasted malts of the porter. Another example of a difficult style done well by New Glarus.

Quick Taps
I’m thrilled to be able to attend the soft opening of Black Husky (909 E. Locust St.) on Friday. I’ve got my time slot picked out and can’t wait to check out the new digs.
