On the Fourth of July 2023, Liz Joy served her first scoops of ice cream in a repurposed filling station in Wauwatosa. A cute retro building with an inviting patio and beckoning walk-up window, Joy Ice Cream Social (8334 W. North Ave.) came alive that day, one customer followed by another and another – a wholesome neighborhood hangout from the get-go.
And that ice cream! Sixteen flavors (three dairy-free) served in cups, scratch-made waffle cones, shakes and flights of different flavors. Also: house-made cold brew, lemonade and flavored teas, and even grown-up drinks like wine and beer. “We wanted to be nostalgic and special and memorable,” says Joy, a proud Tosan.
