It’s Milwaukee Black Restaurant Week!

Enjoy delicious eats from these great spots all week, after today’s kickoff at Sherman Phoenix.

There is never a moment when I wouldn’t say support your local independently owned restaurant. And I’m behind any movement that makes it a special event. Here is the perfect one: Tuesday April 25 – that’s today! – is the kickoff to Milwaukee Black Restaurant Week, now in its eighth year.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

This week is a great catalyst to get folks out in support of local Black-owned businesses. Organized by BlankSpace MKE (a grassroots organization that fuses art and activism), the event runs through Sunday, April 30 and features 17 participating restaurants, including 1700 Pull Up (in the Lindsay Heights space previously occupied by The Tandem), Bellis Bistro (serving Porterhouse steaks to blackened salmon), Confectionately Yours Cafe (known for their signature cookies and baked goods), Turning Tables Tavern & Eatery (fish tacos, mac and cheese bowl, BBQ sandwich), and Twisted Plants, whose two locations offer vegan alternatives to burgers and fries.

Sherman Phoenix (3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave.) – where several of the participating businesses are located – is hosting a kickoff on the first day, 3-7 p.m.

You don’t need any coupons to take advantage of this week of dining. Check the individual restaurant websites for menu info and specials.

Ann Christenson has covered dining for Milwaukee Magazine since 1997. She was raised on a diet of casseroles that started with a pound of ground beef and a can of Campbell's soup. Feel free to share any casserole recipes with her.
