How to Celebrate an Authentic St. Patrick’s Day

How to Celebrate an Authentic St. Patrick’s Day

We asked Corey Webster, president of the Irish Cultural and Heritage Center of Wisconsin, to share traditional Irish ways to honor the beloved holiday.

1. Eat an imported Meal

Pick up authentic rashers (like bacon) and bangers (sausage) at Tralee Imports (5423 W. Vliet St.), along with some corned beef, cabbage and shepherd’s pie. While you’re there, grab some sodas, chocolates and crisps (potato chips) straight from the Emerald Isle.

2. Wear Celtic Clothing

Buy a wool sweater, cap or shawl made in Ireland from Mystic Ireland (4156 S. 108th St., Greenfield). The shop’s owners are from Ireland and hand-select all the Celtic products in their store.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

3. Try Ceili Dancing

Ceili is a lively couple’s jig performed in groups, with a caller shouting out the moves. The Irish Cultural and Heritage Center (2133. W. Wisconsin Ave.) is planning to run ceili dance classes again this month.

4. Listen to Irish Music

Check out recordings from Socks in the Frying Pan, Dervish or The High Kings to hear traditional fiddle and folk singing.

5. Watch the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Webster says if you really want to get out and party, do it Downtown at the Shamrock Club’s Saint Patrick’s Day parade on March 12, with 200 floats, dancers and bagpipers.
