GGOOLLDD, Rio Turbo, Lorde Fredd33 and more play Gloss Weekend in Milwaukee. Plus: the Stream of the Week (Soul Low), and our weekly live music calendar.

Ranging from earnest singer-songwriters and rappers to booty-shaking dance music and sludge punk, boutique label Gloss Records doesn’t shy away from spanning a wide spectrum of styles. While some record labels tend to focus on one genre to ensure its fervent fan base can get behind any album it pushes, Gloss skirts that tradition in favor of well-curated variety, meaning no two albums in Gloss’ growing catalog sound quite the same. In that sense, the label feels like a microcosm of the Milwaukee music scene—budding, diverse and fearless.

For just over a year, Gloss Records has promoted Milwaukee musicians through limited-run cassettes, a strategy which seems less concerned with the de rigueur fetishizing over the magnetic tape format but more interested in finding an easier, cheaper and more reliable option for physical releases than the alternative. Gloss experienced quite a successful opening year, putting out albums by the likes of Soul Low, Lord Fredd33, (ORB), Marielle Allschwang, Surgeons in Heat, Hello Death, Rio Turbo, NO/NO, Soup Moat and D’Amato. The label even ventured into vinyl releases for this first time this December with a GGOOLLDD 12-inch.

This weekend the label celebrates a belated one-year anniversary with two nights of showcases for what’s known as Gloss Weekend. The first night takes place at Cactus Club, 2496 S. Wentworth Ave., on Friday and for night two, the party continues at Mad Planet, 533 E. Center St., on Saturday. The bill includes the eclectic group of bands that have put out music on Gloss since its inception.

The full schedule is below. The shows start at 8 p.m. sharp. Friday and Saturday tickets are $10 each. Weekend passes are available on the Gloss Records website for $15. The passes include a limited-edition cassette compilation for the festival. The festivities extend to Sunday, May 29 with an after party at High Dive, 701 E. Center St., which will feature DJ sets, drink specials and a surprise guest.

Stream of the Week

The visceral sounds of frenetic electric guitars and crashing cymbals are a staple of Soul Low’s indie-rock oeuvre, creating a frenzied tension that usually bubbles over by the conclusion of a song. But the band played against that strength and eschewed those instruments in a rare acoustic set in February at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts, re-arranging their songs with the added accompaniments of cello, violin and trumpet. That performance, which is now available to stream, lays bare the band’s sound and highlights just how talented Soul Low are as songwriters.
