Wednesday, April 20 is D-Day for Crossroads Collective’s newest concept – a restaurant called Hot Wax (2238 N. Farwell Ave.). The food hall location is in the space formerly occupied by Thum (a Loatian spot that I miss so much) and adjacent to Dia Bom, another Crossroads newbie.
Hot Wax’s co-creator, Ben Crevensten, has worked at Twisted Willow in Port Washington and as head chef at the now-closed Milwaukee nightclub Ugly’s. Crevensten also has another business, a “modern deli” popup called Meat & Co.
Join Milwaukee Magazine and Quad for the third-annual Unity Awards Event on March 8 from 6:30-9 p.m. at GATHER in the Deer District.
The Hot Wax menu focuses on meat, including a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, smash burgers, mini muffaletta, griddle mortadella sandwich, hand-breaded chicken tenders and chili dogs. In the non-meat additions category, there’s a Calabrian chile pimento cheese plate, garlic confit cauliflower and fresh bean and corn salad.
“Maybe you’ve always thought you don’t like a certain food, but when you try it at Hot Wax, in a new way, on a sandwich combined with things you like, you can have a completely different experience,” says Crevensten in a press release.
“Wax” is a slang term for a vinyl record – and the theme of music play into the retro decor, which includes a mural of album covers and vintage cartoons.
