A Screen-Free Guide to Indoor Fun With Kids in Milwaukee

Just because it’s a bleh kind of day outside doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Check out some of these indoor parks – we’ve broken them down for younger and older kids.

Burning off youthful energy is easier said than done when Wisconsin weather is temperamental.

Milwaukee has great indoor kid-friendly offerings – like the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum – but there’s even more to explore outside the bounds of the city. Here are some indoor active play when the weather takes a dive.

It’s time to pick your Milwaukee favorites for the year!

1. Nugget Nation

12501 W. BLUEMOUND RD., BROOKFIELD

This space, open since the beginning of 2023, hosts a giant play structure with slides, tunnels and matted play areas. After swinging on the plush wrecking ball, kids can use push bikes to navigate an entire village of playhouses adorned with Melissa-and-Doug-style wooden toys, from cooking sets to beauty salon supplies to building tools. Other high-interest toys like magnetic building sets and dollhouses are also sprinkled throughout.

2. We Rock the Spectrum Kids Gym

140 E. RAWSON AVE. SUITE 314, OAK CREEK

Designed by a licensed physical therapist, this gym stimulates developing senses in a nurturing, inclusive, safe and fun space. The center has scheduled offerings for children with special needs and hosts daily open play for anyone; kids can explore a zip line, slide, trampoline, swings and climbing structures. There’s also an arts and crafts area and a calming room.

3. The Big Backyard

2857 S. 160 ST., NEW BERLIN

The next best thing to playing outside might just be The Big Backyard. This more than 10,000-square-foot warehouse space turned indoor playground features full-size play equipment, bikes, basketball hoops and other ride-on toys. For little ones as young as 6 months, there’s a special area with plastic climbable equipment, plastic playhouses and walkers.

4. Bug & Goose Play Cafe

13448 WATERTOWN PLANK RD., ELM GROVE | 2850 HERITAGE DR., DELAFIELD

The only thing a little one needs to bring to this cafe is an imagination. It has a large play structure with a collection of baby dolls, trains, puzzles, costumes, books and more. You can reserve an open-play session or sign up for one of their many combo playtime/special events, which pairs playtime with a special activity (and sometimes food). They’re often seasonally focused, creating fun opportunities to celebrate holidays of all types with the children.

5. Little Village Play Cafe

6505 W. NORTH AVE., WAUWATOSA

In addition to a play space for kids to roam and comfortable seating for adults, this nearly year-old spot has a community room that hosts events like parent-child art classes, massage sessions and early childhood enrichment. An in-house cafe serves coffee drinks and pizza from Flour Girl & Flame and, unlike other play places in the area, beer and wine is available for adults to help soothe frayed nerves.

8. Urban Air Adventure Park
