Welcome to Wauwautosa, formerly Wauwatosa, and anciently Wau-wau-too-sa.

It’s true that the spellings have changed throughout the years, but we weren’t aware the city was due to undergo another. Yet today, Wauwatosa NOW reporter Stephanie Scott tweeted a photo of a city sign posted near the intersection of 124th St. and Capitol Dr., visible when entering the city heading East on Capitol. “Wauwautosa [break] population 51,308,” it reads.

Who knows if the city intended this extra “u” as a Thursday surprise, or if it’s simply an error by the sign maker. We do suspect, however, that the sign will be replaced soon.
