Often times, couples do not even consider winter weddings in Wisconsin due to thoughts of freezing temps and blizzard conditions. Even a duo of Wisconsinites who have braved the blustery conditions their entire lives seem to get “cold feet” at the thought of January nuptials. And while the mild December we’ve seen this year is not a guarantee that next year will be equally as mild, it serves as a reminder that planning a winter doesn’t mean you are destined for snowmageden part two.

Winter weddings in Wisconsin inspire some truly magical designs in terms of event planning. Of course there is the ever classic purely white designs with everything from snow white flowers to white linens reminiscent of freshly laid snow. I like to think of the White Witch’s castle in The Chronicles of Narnia for inspiration on these all white extravaganzas. One money saving trick for winter floral designs is to use baby’s breath as the main attraction. While normally used as a filler flower it can be quite an eye catcher and mimics tiny snowflakes. (It also saves you a ton of money on your floral budget!) Then, by adding just a touch of tiny crystals you will add glam and sparkle to all of your centerpieces for little cost.If you are looking for a hint of color, light blue and silver tones add subtle effects while pairing white with a merlot or evergreen shade brings a festive holiday feel while not over-doing the Christmas time effect.

Another money saving idea that can only be used during the holiday season are ornaments and even treetoppers replacing candles as centerpiece accents. If you are lucky enough to have time on your side when planning, think ahead and grab silver ornament balls on deep discount after the Christmas season the previous year. They can be used in bowls, hung from floral, and then saved to decorate your home in years to come.

If you are afraid that you’ll miss out on outdoor photos, just Google “winter wedding Wisconsin” and you’ll see that as long as you are willing to brave the cold, you will be rewarded with some absolutely breathtaking photographic memories. It also gives you an excuse to break out the fluffy white shrugs and mufflers to keep you and your maids toasty warm. They may feign frostbite for a bit after you’ve asked them to stand in a foot of snow but having warm hot chocolate (spiked?) waiting on your limo bus will have everyone warmed from the inside-out in no time.

Even your wedding favors can get festive by offering individually wrapped holiday cookies along with to-go mugs of coffee and cocoa to take with guests on their journey home. Many families have traditional treats that they always make around the holidays and offering a special cookie from both the bride and groom’s family symbolizes a merging of families and traditions. Other favor ideas include homemade candy canes, personalized ornaments or pine cone fireplace starters.

So there you go girls and grooms. Be brave, be original and don’t be afraid of a little snow!
