A Pair of Exciting New Brews from Sprecher
This week, Sprecher is bottling two new beers that are worth noting, and perfect for winter. Czar Brew Russian Imperial Stout and Commando Scotch Ale have both been aging nicely in white oak bourbon barrels for two years. This week, both make their debut in the Sprecher Gift Shop (701 W. Glendale Ave.) before making it to store shelves on the week of Nov. 10. Both weigh in at a hefty 12% ABV and should make for nice winter warmers. I’m excited about this release from Sprecher and will definitely give them both a taste.

Barley Pop of the Week

I was curious about the 3 Sheeps Nimble Lips Noble Tongue IPA with Squid Ink ever since I heard about the interesting brew. The most notable characteristic offered by the odd ingredient is color. The brew is a muddy dark gray with a light gray head. Any hint of brine in the flavor however is moderate at best. The bitterness of the hops comes through nicely and it tasted like a solid IPA. I love this sort of experimentation from 3 Sheeps. And experimentation is even better when the end result is palatable.

Quick Taps

The specialty brew during the Friday night fish fry at Lakefront Brewery on Nov. 7 from 4 to 9:30 p.m. is IBA with Amarillo, Belma and Calypso hops.

Momofuku restaurant owner/chef David Chang earned a fair amount of commentary for his column in GQ explaining why he hates fancy beer. It reads a little bit like he’s intentionally stirring the pot. Although, I do have to agree with the fact that a watery beer tastes better after a mowing the lawn on a hot day – that’s a rare example of when I’d take a High Life over an Imperial IPA.

It was a strange week for World of Beer (1300 W. Brady St.). Social media posts announced the closing of the location, but were then quickly refuted. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel got to the bottom of the odd situation, and it appears the story may not be over yet.
