Second Street Arrival
If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the opening of Zak’s Cafe in Walker’s Point (231 S. Second St.), the due date right now is this Saturday (June 18). The plan is to be open for brunch on its first day of operations, as well as Father’s Day brunch on Sunday. Zak’s will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu featuring everything from brioche French toast and a classic Zak burger to pan-roasted chicken and seared ahi tuna ($1.99-$19.95). Check out Zak’s website for hours and so forth.

White (and Rosé) Hot Summer
Taste 25 wines in two hours while nibbling appetizers and lounging on a patio. Sounds like a superb way to multitask. And it could be your way to spend your Friday night this week, in this French summer wine event created by Thief Wine and the Walker’s Point French restaurant Chez Jacques. I don’t have a list of the featured wines, but they’ll include rosés, whites and light reds. Thief refers to the event as a walk-around tasting, set on Chez Jacques’ patio. The snacks sound portable: duck and chicken pâtés, goat cheese and tapenade with roasted red pepper, etc. The cost is $25 per person. Contact Chez Jacques to reserve a spot: 414-672-1040. (1022 S. First St.)

The Fate of Skate
Summer? What’s that?… Look which restaurant is lightening up its menu for the season: Coquette Cafe (316 N. Milwaukee St., 414-291-2655). The Third Ward French venue has tricked out its menu of coq au vin and bacon-wrapped Strauss veal meatloaf with some summery delights: house-made caramelized onion and goat cheese ravioli with sweet peas and tomato concassé; grilled shrimp with patty pan squash, sweet-and-sour Swiss chard and Provençal basmati rice; and pan-seared skate with arugula, black olives and toasted walnut salad ($19.95-$21.95).
