At a Storefront Near You
If you’ve seen one guinea hen, you’ve definitely not seen them all. The photo you’re looking at (above) is a guinea hen leg and breast with fava beans, onion and sorrel. It’s an entrée featured at c.1880 Restaurant, which is officially open (as of May 3). The restaurant website includes many photos of attractive menu items, and of what looks like a very warm interior – the photos shot by Milwaukee Magazine’s former staff photographer Kevin J. Miyazaki. If you noticed more local sourcing of restaurant ingredients, you are observant. Chef/owner Thomas Hauck devotes one page of his website to the sources he uses for lamb with shiitake mushrooms, mache and mustard; skate with lemon, yogurt and broccoli rabe; and other large entrées($19-$28). (Appetizers, too.) Hours: Tues-Thurs 5:30-10 p.m.; Fri-Sat 5-10 p.m. (1100 S. First St., 414-431-9271)
The froyo continues to flow. D-day for the Third Ward’s My Yo My! is this Saturday (May 5) at 11 a.m. The froyo shop will offer 10 daily flavors (Dutch chocolate, Alpine vanilla, blueberry Acai and others), plus a whole mess of toppings. And My Yo My! is using the popular serve yourself/weigh-and-pay formula. Hours: Sun-Thurs 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Fri-Sat 11 a.m.-midnight. Click here for an immediate hunger rush. (100 S. Water St., 414-223-0277)
A Floor and More
You can’t redo a restaurant’s kitchen floor while people are walking on it every day. What’s up this week at Roots Restaurant & Cellar? Repairs to the kitchen floor, which necessitated a hiatus this week. The plan is to reopen this Saturday night (May 5). And soon, Daniel Jacobs expects to start serving his spring menu. A few tantalizing highlights: homemade falafel sandwich with tomato-cucumber and chile-garlic sambal sauce; Hong Kong BBQ pork ramen; and seared halibut with lyonnaise potatoes, fava beans, spring onions and reduced beet syrup. (1818 N. Hubbard St., 414-374-8480)
Cinco de Drink-o
Are you Cinco de Mayo-ing it this weekend? At La Perla, the festivities start at 1:30 p.m., with traditional Mexican dance performed by children from Escuela Vieau School. The dance will then switch to live music – Latin rock, salsa, merengue, funk and more. If you run out of distractions – including the flowing Coronaritas – there is always the mechanical pepper ride. May 5, from 1:30 p.m. (734 S. Fifth St., 414-645-9888)
