  • The new Milwaukee Public Schools budget invests more money in art, music and physical education while cutting overall spending by 2 percent. Other initiatives focus on helping higher-achieving students, including an expansion of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs. Approved Tuesday night by the school board, the 2013-14 budget is down from $1.19 to $1.17 billion and creates 45 new teaching positions, including 25 art teachers. Fox 6 has more details.
  • Brian Murphy’s retirement becomes official today. The Oak Creek police lieutenant was one of the first responders to 2012’s Sikh Temple of Wisconsin shooting and suffered multiple gunshot wounds. His efforts have since been celebrated locally and nationally, but those wounds ultimately kept him from returning to his police work, and his retirement ends a 22-year career. Fox 6 has comments from Murphy and Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards.
  • And now, an international soccer report. You know, for the sports fan who was too busy watching the Milwaukee Brewers lose or San Antonio take a 2-1 lead over Miami in the NBA Finals. The United States men’s soccer team took another step toward qualifying for the 2014 World Cup by beating Panama 2-0 Tuesday night. Goals came from Eddie Johnson and the resurgent Jozy Altidore. The U.S. now leads its qualifying group in the race to Brazil.
  • Finally, a Wisconsin state representative is proposing to punish state law enforcement officers for… enforcing federal law. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reminds Michael Schraa (R-Algoma) that the U.S. Civil War ended in 1865.

Howie Magner is a former managing editor of Milwaukee Magazine who often writes about sports for the magazine.
