Milwaukee Legends Old and New

Tuesday, August 28: Picture The Ocean @ Bremen Cafe, 9:00 p.m. Canadian trio Picture the Ocean (formerly known as duo Jesse Dee & Jacquie B) serves up a solid blend of pop-tinged alt-rock with a hint of Americana roots (ironic, no?). The band  is certainly making the most of its summer. After touring in support of fellow countrywoman Aurora Jane, Picture The Ocean didn’t skip a beat, hitting the road on their own with a sweep through the Midwest before heading back up to Canada to keep the party going through September. Thursday, August 30: Paul Cebar @ Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, 7:30 p.m. ($10)
It doesn’t get much more Milwaukee than spending a late summer evening rocking out to local legend Paul Cebar in the open air. And the best part? You can get your free tickets to the show right here. (929 N. Water St., MarcusCenter.org)

Friday, August 31: Jucifer with Maidens and Ellis @ Cactus Club, 10 p.m.
For most people, devastating, brutal and hellish aren’t typical adjectives that you would like people to bandy about when describing you. But for nomadic sludge metal duo Jucifer, those are the only words that can come close to getting across the sheer intensity and vibe of a live show. Milwaukee’s own Maidens will play its farewell show in support. Not a bad way to go out! (2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Also: Catacombz @ The Uptowner, 10 p.m. (FREE)
(1032 E. Center St.)

Also: Kelly Hogan @ The Pabst Theater (Pabst Pub), 7 p.m. (FREE)

MUSIC NOTES SHOW OF THE WEEK
Saturday, September 1: Field Report (CD Release Show) with Old Earth and Aero Flynn @ Linneman’s Riverwest Inn, 10 p.m. ($12)

Christopher Porterfield has always had a knack for crafting beautiful songs, as evidenced by his now defunct group Conrad Plymouth. But now the Milwaukee troubadour is showing what can happen when you combine talent like that with connections in his new band Field Report. The band’s self-titled debut album, which was recorded at Justin Vernon’s studio (Bon Iver), has already landed Field Report a deal with Partisan Records and an opening slot on tour with Counting Crows. Saturday night’s release of the album will feature Porterfield playing the entire album on his own. For a sneak peek, you can listen to the song “Taking Alcatraz” here. Bonus: Every person in attendance will receive a free copy of the new album. (1001 E. Locust St., Linnemans.com)

Also: The Uptown Savages @ Milwaukee Boat Line, 9 p.m. ($19)
(101 W. Michigan St., MKEBoat.com)

Also: Rosco with Brief Candles, The Volta Sound and Technicolor Teeth @ Cactus Club, 9:30 p.m.
(2496 S. Wentworth Ave., CactusClubMilwaukee.com)

Sunday, September 2: Green Gallery East Benefit featuring Sat. Nite Duets and Sarah Luther @ Circle-A Cafe, 8 p.m.
If you’re looking to raise money for your local arts landmark looking to recover after a devastating fire, there may not be a more fitting Milwaukee band to help get butts through the door right now than Sat. Nite Duets. The slightly off-kilter crew have shown off their artistic side in multiple media with their now legendary album artwork, off-the-wall homemade music videos and, of course, the music. Read Tyler’s take on this quirky trio here. (932 E. Chambers St., circle-a-cafe.org)

Also: Pile with Dharma Dogs and Malacai @ Y-Not III, 9 p.m.

(1854 E. Kenilworth Pl.)
