School in Session?
The threshold at 1101 S. Second St., in Walker’s Point, seemed relatively quiet last week, as Summerfest tore up the Third Ward. That’s the address of Braise Restaurant, which took a 10-day break from serving diners to do some interior work on the culinary school-to-come and the second-floor quarters that will house private events. Merci Me
To the French, wine is virtually synonymous with water. It is one of life’s necessities. You agree? If so, you might be drawn to one event in particular at Bastille Days this weekend the ticketed Wine Tasting. The event features two tastings on Fri July 13 and Sat July 14 at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The wines are not limited to French labels. (It includes wines from Italy, Australia, California and others.) For more info, click here. The cost is $25 in advance, $35 at Bastille Days. The festival that stretches over eight city blocks offers a hodgepodge of food vendors, including 2012 recruits Ward’s House of Prime and Catch 22. Back for the second year are Burke’s Lakeside (from Summit, Wis.) and Coquette Café. (Festival dates: July 12-15) Hours: Thurs July 12, 11 a.m.-midnight; Fri July 13, 11 a.m.-midnight; Sat July 14, 10 a.m.-midnight; Sun July 15, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

French Continuum
If the French feeling conjured up in Cathedral Square is not making you feel close to the homeland of Gerard Depardieu, a building on busy First Street in Walker’s Point might do the job, depending. Chez Jacques is running a set of Bastille Days specials. For entrées, there’s poulet Basquaise (roast chicken topped with sautéed tomatoes, peppers, garlic and ham; and (you insert the French flavor) pan-seared scallops with pineapple, cucumber and jalapeno chutney. Happy Hour lasts much longer than 60 minutes weekdays. It’s 2-6 p.m. and features $5 appetizers, by-the-glass wine, Mimosas and Bloody Marys. Or perhaps you’d enjoy a Tremblement de Terre (translation: Earthquake), a cocktail made with equal parts absinthe and cognac. Its creation is attributed to the French painter (and alcoholic) Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Hours: Tues-Sat 10 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sun 10 a.m.-8 p.m. (1022 S. Second St., 414-672-1040)
