Bursting at the seams with undeniable joy is how I would describe the current exhibit at the Tory Folliard Gallery, “Life Lived Large,” the painting and sculpture of Lon Michels. Colorful, creative and intensely intricate don’t do justice to the creative work on display at this iconic Milwaukee gallery until June 30th. From pastoral scenes, to his masterpiece “The Last Supper,” these oversized and exuberant paintings defy accurate description. A lifelong artist who completed his first serious painting at age 8, Mr. Michels has pursued a life that only a few could imagine. His own story is on display as well as his masterful artistic style. A Wisconsin-born pied piper, he draws us into his work with happy color and seemingly simplistic technique, that on further examination reveals layers of complexity and meaning. This is a show that should not be missed. Mr. Michels is happy to paint family, friends, pets, and partners, and it shows. Whether plying his paint on vintage fur to create new and interesting texture and color, or formal landscapes that contain whimsical surprises, even vibrant “trophies”!! You won’t stop smiling in awe as you peruse this show. Check out the gallery section at www.fashionfarmboy.com for more imagery from this monumental exhibit!
