Diverse Do it Yourselfers….

Why is it that people that march to the beat of their own drummer, (or for that matter iPod, smartphone or other electronic gadget), always pull off the self assurance in their fashion choices that the rest of us can only dream of? Are they simply more self involved, or would the more proper term be less? Do they try on endless variations of their attire before walking out the door, or throw it on with abandon? I think it would be fair to say that the people in these photos want to be seen positively, and at the same…

The Good the Bad and the Ugly?

Like they always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that axiom is certainly true when it comes to style and fashion. This February, while attending Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013, I went out of my way to take pictures of people whose sartorial taste I found interesting. Featured in this blog post are some of my photographs of folks who were feeling their fashion. Just like art, I always say, “I don’t have to like it to allow it to exist.” I’m not partial to judging others taste in fashion really, but you can if…

Sketching Fall 2013 Fashion

Obviously, there is a lot that goes into the design of couture fashion. But it all starts with an idea that is first fleshed out with sketches that the designer and his or her team work faithfully to recreate for the runway. Below are the inspirational sketches for four of the designers who will be debuting their fall 2013 Collections at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City Feb. 7-14. I love seeing the sketches before I actually witness the garments that they inevitably become. Take a sneak peek into the creative mind of the designers as they note…

What’s Wantable(.co) for spring accessories?

Last October I started a journey with Milwaukee based e-commerce retailer Wantable.co as their accessories curator. As a fashion stylist for many years, I was thrilled with the opportunity to share and explain ideas about fashion jewelry to their customers. The site has the distinction of providing experts in the fields of cosmetics as well. This flexibility allows women to purchase a one–time, hand–selected package or subscribe monthly to our stylish offerings in either realm of beauty products or jewelry. Working closely with a buyer, I suggest ideas for what will be on the front lines of fashion and…

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013 Preview

One of my favorite fashion presentations during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York is the Concept Korea collaborative show. It will be the highlight of my first day there in just a few days from now!  It is intended to promote Korean fashion designers and help them in their attempts to gain access to the U.S. fashion market.  Concept Korea returns for their seventh time to the tents on February 7th, 2013 to show the Fall/Winter 2013 collections. A proven talent platform, Concept Korea has chosen the best of Korean design to demonstrate their prowess in artful and elegant fashion. CHOIBOKO by…

Goodbye but not Farewell for Pfister Artist in Residence

Milwaukee’s Pfister Hotel Artist in Residence program has been a success to say the least during its existence. But the most recent A.I.R., textile designer and fiber artist Timothy Westbrook brought something more to the proverbial table at the public workspace in the lobby of the inn, emotional power. That was certainly on display at the most recent, balmy for Jan. 18th in Wisconsin, Gallery Night. His tireless Gallery Night show producer, Alexis Rose Criscimagna’s beautiful tear streaked face, as she introduced Mr. Westbrook, delicately revealed what was to come in the presentation ahead, as she confessed that “her dreams were coming true,” by being able to coordinate the…

Baby Got Black!

Black is a hard working non color that always does the trick when it comes to inspiring fashion and design.  On trend for the seasons to come are the pairing of disparate textures, patterns, and silhouettes, that take this fashion dark horse to the next level of sophistication.  Check out these looks I photographed at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City, that were featured in a multiple designer presentation.  You’ll be sure to notice the variations in fabrication such as the interplay of a sheer  delicate looking blouse teamed up with heavy metal leather.  Feathers, fur, and bugle beading add…

Fusing Art and Fashion at the Pfister

The Artist in Residence program at the historic Pfister Hotel is one of the jewels in Milwaukee’s crown. By bringing in artists who work in a space that is literally in the lobby of the venerable hotel, guests and city residents alike get the unique opportunity to see the creative experience up close and personal. Nearing the end of his tenure as the current Artist In Residence, I tracked down textile/fashion designer Timothy Westbrook to ask him about the program, and how he got involved in the first place. Tell me about your background and where you’re from. I grew up in…

Last Minute Local Holiday Love!

Compiling lists of wares that you recommend is one of my favorite holiday traditions. I love reading about what other people recommend that I may not know about. My list is completely arbitrary in the best of ways … these are actually places that I purchased items from to give to others this season. If we support our small businesses, they in turn make life in our all our local neighborhoods better for everyone! Milwaukee Design Collection (new name, Residence), located at 5205 W. North Ave., is an interior design group that also retails affordable home luxuries! Since I have known…

All that Glitters…

Since starting her eponymous collection in 1999, Anne Bowen has kept busy honing her aesthetic of ultra-feminine, yet not too girly couture.  Expanding into the Bridal world with a collection in 2009, she has forged her name into the New York fashion lexicon.   Currently sold at only the highest of the high end retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus to name a few.    I have attended her presentations on a few occasions during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, and enjoy her attention to detail and exquisite handwork on her garments, especially the evening gowns.  These…
