It’s that time again! The Historic Third Ward Association is hosting Gallery Night and Day this Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19.
“The January event always sees fewer participants due to weather concerns. But whether it’s a blizzard or single digit temperatures, Gallery Night goes on. The forecast for Friday is 36 degrees, which is perfect for ice-sculptors and gallery-goers,” says Ruth Lawson of Historic Third Ward Association.
Here are a few other things I’m looking forward to:
Friday night marks the grand opening of the second Habitat For Humanity ReStore in Milwaukee (420 S. 1st St.), chock-full of gently used home improvement items, furniture, accessories, building materials and appliances. Have a penchant for DIY home decor? The ReStore is a thrifter’s paradise with thousands of items at low prices. There will also be art on display from sponsors, donors, volunteers and Habitat homeowners created from reclaimed items from the ReStore. Proceeds from ReStore are used for Habitat’s mission of building affordable homes for Milwaukee’s low-income families. The store will be open on Friday from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Embrace the frost at the 10th-annual Sculptures on Ice event, taking place all day Friday (10 a.m.-6 p.m.) in Catalano Square in the Third Ward. This year’s theme for sculptors is Flora and Fauna (i.e. plants). You know the competition will be fierce because artists are vying for cash and great prizes. Warm up with a drink at Club Charlie’s at 7 p.m. to hear the announcement of the winners.
If you love photography, check out the Coalition of Photographic Artists sixth annual Midwest Juried Exhibition at the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts (839 S. 5th St.). More than 30 emerging and established artists from all over the Midwest will have their poignant work on display.
