Growlers Galore
I stopped by The Malt Shoppe (813 N. Mayfair Rd.) over the weekend, and the theme there appears to be variety. There are 30 taps to choose from to fill your growler. And the bottle selection isn’t too shabby either. Hundreds of options are available, including a few hard-to-find beers (I was fortunate enough to pick up a Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree). Growler proliferation in Milwaukee is a good thing.
Brenner Brewing
I finally made a trip to Brenner Brewing (706 S. Fifth St.). There’s a lot to like about the place, starting with the beer. The City Fox Pale Ale was my favorite. It’s refreshing and has a nice moderate bitterness. The Bacon Bomb Rauchbier was surprisingly good too. I’m not generally a fan of smoked beers, but Bacon Bomb was balanced enough that I enjoyed it. The unique tasting room at Brenner is adjacent to The Pitch Project, a gallery and artist’s studio. The beer and art blend nicely and make Brenner Brewing a great addition to the Milwaukee brewing scene.
Quick Taps
The specialty brew during the Friday night fish fry at Lakefront Brewery on Oct. 31 from 4 to 9:30 p.m. is Fixed Gear with hippy hops.

Barley Pop of the Week
The third proprietary beer at Ray’s Growler Gallery (8930 W. North Ave.) is a winner. Karben4 brewed Ray-ley’s Comet especially for Ray’s. It’s an extremely well balanced IPA that doesn’t hit you over the head with bitterness. The brew was tapped for the first time last Saturday. Get there in the next week or two to sample some.
