Have you heard of Dominic Wahl? If you haven’t, this definitely won’t be the last time you do. She operates under the name “Tangled Mess,” as a hair and makeup artist for photos, theater and shows – all while juggling a full time job as a hair stylist at Lavish Salon and Spa. Her talent is incredible, and she decided it was time for Milwaukee to experience it while showcasing other talented artists in the area. Together with the help of her sister Natalia Roman, the “Figments of Expression” show was born. It was to be a runway show unlike any other. Instead of “fashion” being in the spot light, it was the hair and makeup created by local artists that would be featured. Tryouts were held in Milwaukee and Madison, and while many stylists and makeup artists gave it their best, only six made the cut.

The much anticipated show took place on Friday, July 20 at the Scottish Rite Center in Milwaukee. Hours before the event, drivers were shocked to see characters of a fantasy crossing the street, some even stopping to take photos of the models. Excited to see the talent? Here are a few!

The “Figments of Expression” show opened up with whimsical fairies by hair stylist Jennifer Bruder gracing the runway, walking to the beat of a live drummer.

The audience gasped as stylist Trisha Lysaght’s creations stampeded the stage as animals of the safari, complete with body paint and matching custom shoes.

Models: Me!! As the lion, would you ever know? Gina Ciurro as the giraffe. Styled by Trisha Lysaght.

Pop Art gave a retro feel with American flag inspired costumes!

Model: Karen Canido. Styled by Nola Kahn.

The show ended with Dominic Wahl’s own designs, a mythical King and Queen looking over their kingdom!

And the show creator herself! Dominic Wahl!

Will there be one next year? There are rumors, but for we’ll just have to wait to find out. You can search on Facebook for the Milwaukee Style Calendar to keep updated on fashion and beauty events happening around the area.

Lyneé Ruiz started her career in beauty as a salon hairstylist at Carenza in Brookfield. Seven years later, she signed as a hair and makeup artist for Ford Models in Chicago and Miami. While her job consists of being on sets for advertising, editorial, TV, and backstage at New York Fashion Week, Milwaukee will always be home. Writing about tips and tricks she learns along the way for Milwaukee Magazine is one of her favorite creative outlets.
