Fashion Plus Design

Every year, Callen Construction partners with Common Ground Ministry/Elena’s House to produce a fashion show fundraiser.  Tickets are $40 and all proceeds go to support Elena’s House. Read more about it here. This year‘s event will be held tonight., Aug. 20, beginning at 5:30 pm.  In addition to the live band, appetizers, cocktails and a silent auction, there’s also the fashion show which will be hosted this year by Bjorn Nasett, Milwaukee’s own Fashion Farm Boy.  My favorite part about this show is that they pair home design pieces with fashion, literally having the models walk down the runway with granite samples and sinks.   This…

Wrist Candy

Every season I find myself standing at a jewelry counter coveting a bright candy colored watch, only to walk away with nothing because I couldn’t commit to a color. What if I get sick of it? Or it only looks good with a few outfits in my wardrobe? So I was thrilled when I found the Iken Watch, a customizable watch that allows you to mix and match the bezel, band and watch. I picked out a red, white and grey version and was surprised by how much I really liked it. Of course, the first thing I compared iKen…

I Framed My Wedding Dress

Ta-da! When I saw this idea on Pinterest, I couldn’t wait to try it. Really, why should your dress stay hidden in your closet for years? Framing mine was the best decision I could have made. And don’t worry, if your daughter actually does decide to wear your dress down the road, the dress is perfectly preserved and can be taken out when you need it.  I took my dress in to Michael’s on Highway 100 in West Allis. I told them the dimensions I wanted the frame to be, and we started laying out my dress. They actually take…

The Top Hair Colors for Spring

Spring and fall are my favorite seasons for hair color. Most of my clients want a little change to ring in the season, and this year is proving to be no different. So behold: the most-requested  hair colors, modeled by my own clients.  1. Subtle Ombré Ombré hair color is here to stay, but lately I’ve noticed I’m being asked to do subtle, grown-out highlights, instead of all the hair graduating to light at its ends. On Chrissy, I placed highlights along her face going all the way up to the roots, and then balancing highlights further down on the…

Sandal Weather

Last September I was standing on the shores of Lake Michigan on probably one of the last perfect days of summer, smoothing out a model’s wavy hair as photographer Crystal Schreiner clicked away. We were photographing the spring/summer advertising campaign for Muk Luks, and I was pleasantly surprised to see their new footwear was actually covetable. Its bright colors and fun prints now bring back warm summer memories for me. One thing I was shocked I didn’t already know is that Muk Luks are distributed and designed in Milwaukee, and have been since the brand’s inception. Muk Luks’ parent company, Reliable of…

Everything You Wantable

When I get home from a long day of hair and makeup, I bust through our door, throw down my bags and stand in front of the open refrigerator with my coat on like a famished animal. The only thing that stops this ritual is if there is something shiny and new waiting for me on the counter. This time, it was a chic little white box adorned with a simple W. My husband laughed as I curiously opened the box and pulled out lipsticks, glosses, nail polish and other products. It was like Christmas morning in the middle of spring. What is this little white box? Wantable, a subscription…

The Making of ‘Return to The Runway’

How do you tackle hair and makeup for 25 models walking in a top-notch fashion show? Well, Miranda Levy decided to enlist me for hairstyling and local makeup artist Michael Weiss.. We were pretty honored. Held Friday Feb. 28 at the Intercontinental Hotel, I wanted to give you a look at what went on behind the scenes.  We each put together a team, and got to work on the looks for her “Return to the Runway.” Michael had to come up with a makeup look that worked well with blues, plaids, and bright colors. He put together a fresh-faced, slightly…

Welcome to My Dark Side

Let’s start with the obvious: I’ve been blond my entire life. But going brunette always sounded like a fun idea. I would look at my brunette friends and love how shiny their hair was, how good their skin looked, and think they were just more exotic-looking. Twice I tried going darker, and days later I would be begging and bribing one of the poor stylists at my salon to bring me back to blonde. So why is it so hard for a lifelong blonde to go brunette? After watching not only myself but my clients go through this process for…

10 Things Women Think Every Man Should Have

Image via Shutterstock. As a follow up to my last post on what men think every woman should have, I asked various women of different ages and backgrounds what make them weak at the knees. Here are the most popular responses: 1. Facial Hair  This was the most popular response. A little scruff is manly, and apparently we love it. 2. Good Hygiene I’m going to put this as delicately as possible: Well-groomed everywhere. 3. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Cologne Quite a few ladies said this was a must. I went to the nearest perfume counter and gave it a good sniff,…

10 Things Guys Think Every Girl Should Have

Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I work with Harper’s Bazaar as a beauty product tester and a small (but I hope significant) voice of opinion on fashion. Lately they’ve been doing a lot of top 10 lists that are so fun to read. So with their tactics in mind, I decided to ask local Milwaukee men what they think every woman should have. I told them to keep it fashion and beauty-related, but… guys are guys. These men (some single, some not) come from various backgrounds; from hair stylists, to makeup artists, photographers, musicians, designers, construction and more. 1. Red Lipstick  This…
