Complain as I may about the onset of frigid temperatures, I like fall. More accurately, I like fall fashion. I welcome in the season by piling on the layers, slipping into a pair of knee-high boots, and pulling on a luxurious wool coat.
Fall clothes lend themselves to substance and style – and a lot of the trends I see this season have classic appeal, which means they can be carried over to next year and beyond. Here are the must-have fall items for fall:

1. Open finger mittens
Open-finger gloves are perfect for layering. I found black open-finger mittens go well worn over grey or deep purple knit mittens. Looking for that warm and fuzzy feeling? Add a touch of fur trim, and let your hands do the talking. This style of gloves is also perfect worn on their own when temps are mild or indoors.

2. Tall boots
No matter how you describe your style, knee-high riding boots will compliment your wardrobe – and most are incredible wearable. Don’t worry – the horse is optional. Classic colors such as black, cognac, or light tan work best for riding boots. Although most boots in this style have a relaxed, almost rugged appeal, you can pump up the sexiness by finding a pair with a zipper up the back or subtle hardware (think gold grommets).

3. Tights
Don’t get me wrong – leggings are great for fall, but when you want to dress things up a bit, tights (patterned, opaque, sheer) can
accomplish something that leggings can’t. They’ve become a fall staple, never falling in or out of trend if you pick classic colors and patterns. I love the layered affect you can get with these wide-pattern mesh tights. So cute when pulled over a contrasting opaque tight. Try the yellow mesh layered over opaque navy tights.

| Hooded Scarf, H&M. |
4. Hooded scarf
It’s cold outside. You need to stay warm, but you don’t want to pile on the cold-weather gear. Do you put on the hat or the scarf? You no longer have to choose. Cozy-to-the-core hooded scarves are completely functional. I say bigger is better with this accessory, and it can be worn as an extension of your outfit long after you peel off your coat and mittens. The look is perfect for casual weekend outfits.

| Boyfriend Blazer, French Connection. |
5. Blazer
The classic boyfriend blazer is a quintessential transitional piece. Throw it over a little white t-shirt and you instantly look pulled together and office appropriate. Pair it with ripped skinny jeans and platform heels and your ready for a night on the town. I’ll be adding this menswear flair over my holiday party dress to keep it “office party appropriate” and keep me warm. Don’t be afraid to expand beyond the black blazer. Soft neutrals work with virtually everything.

6. Cape
Yes, a cape can be a bold topper, but it’s also a new, modern twist on the traditional trench coat. When wearing a cape, the key is finding balance in your outfit. Skinny jeans or leggings will help offset the wide top. Find a cape that hits just below your waist and no longer than mid-thigh – it will prevent the look from getting too bulky.
