It was a match made in heaven when I met Sarah Brucker, owner of beauty boutique Blush. She loves to play with makeup, and I love to play with hair – so why not play together? We met at Blush’s Third Ward location on N. Water Street where Sarah agreed to teach me the latest in makeup trends for fall.
1. The Garnet Lip

By keeping the rest of the face light and minimal, Sarah put the focus on a deep garnet lip color. To make sure my face didn’t look too washed out, she contoured my cheeks with bronzer, and used a golden tan eyeshadow in the hollows of my eyes. Sarah lined the lips with a matching garnet lip liner (and colored the entire lip in!) to ensure the deep lipstick wouldn’t bleed or wear off.
To create a very matte appearance, she added a light layer of translucent powder after the lipstick was applied. Sarah used a mixture of makeup products to achieve the look including Laura Mercier, Kevyn Aucoin, and Smashbox.

2. The Jewel-Tone Smokey Eye

Just in time for Fashion’s Night Out, we decided to try the jewel-tone smokey eye. Picture the perfect smokey eye, but in deep jewel tones such as ruby, sapphire or emerald. Sarah picked a deep purple to achieve the smokey eye and a glossy nude lip. Sarah used Laura Mercier for the entire look.
A little rule of thumb: if you play up the eyes, play down your lips and vice versa. I would try to explain her blending techniques for this look ,but she’s honestly too good for me to write a step-by-step guide. You will just have to go in to see her!
In all honesty, I’ve never had prettier makeup. It’s worth the trip to Blush, because you won’t just leave looking great, you will also learn techniques you’ll use for a lifetime.
