Wisconsin’s 2012 Cow of the Year (as decided by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection) comes from the lovely Cozy Nook Farm in Waukesha, where her formidable udders have pumped out as much as 39,682 pounds of milk, 1,303 pounds of milk protein and 1,569 pounds of milk fat in a single year. To date, she’s produced a total of 191,776 pounds of milk and some of the best bulls in the breed — International Brown Swiss. According to the department, 8 out of the country’s top 30 are Twylight sons or grandsons. And her daughters have become outstanding milk producers in their own right.

The official “Cow of the Year Proclamation” will be made on Oct. 4 at the World Dairy Expo in Madison by department Secretary Ben Brancel and Alice in Dairyland contest winner Rochelle Ripp. Twylight just calved on Sept. 1, so we’re not sure if she’ll make the trip herself.
