Big Cheese
Are you eating enough cheese? I reckon not. But I believe this can easily be rectified. Consider the new Clock Shadow Creamery. The creamery’s retail shop and the Purple Door Ice Cream store are both open and occupying the same ground-floor space at 138 W. Bruce St., a building on the corner of Second and Bruce in Walker’s Point. At this time, you can pop in to check out the (as yet) limited selection of packaged Wisconsin cheeses. Clock Shadow is not just a retail shop, but a production facility for Cedar Grove’s fresh cheeses. Cedar Grove’s soft, spreadable quark is available for purchase at Clock Shadow. Currently, production is at Cedar Grove’s Sauk County headquarters. But soon, quark – along with other fresh Cedar Grove cheeses – will be made on-site at Clock Shadow. Incidentally, the shop carries crackers, mustards, cheese cutters and other wares. As for Purple Door – the Milwaukee company whose ice creams are served at Odd Duck, Juniper 61, The Smoke Shack and other local restaurants – it sells scoops of salted caramel, espresso, raspberry-green tea and five other flavors right there at Clock Shadow. Hours (for both businesses): Sun noon-4 p.m.; Tues-Thurs 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Fri-Sat 10 a.m.-8 p.m.
Surging News
The latest news to come from Milwaukee’s SURG Restaurant Group is the announcement of a new executive chef for 8-twelve MVP Bar & Grill, the Ryan Braun/Aaron Rodgers restaurant slated to open this summer in the former Brookfield location of Charro (17800 W. Bluemound Rd.). Aaron Patin – the chef originally slated to open 8-twelve – recently left SURG to work for Stone Creek Coffee. The new executive chef for 8-twelve, Rafael Elisea, was running the kitchen at Florida’s Graffito South, sister restaurant of Ryan Braun’s Graffito in the Third Ward.
Foam Love
Milwaukee Magazine’s July issue is devoted to the beverage that slides down a native’s gullet smoother than water. Could that be anything other than beer? The thirst-quenching news comes that this Saturday (June 16, 1-5 p.m.) is the 2012 Wisconsin Beer Lovers Festival. The fest – held at Bayshore Town Center – offers selections from more than 31 Wisconsin craft breweries. So what does this have to do with Dish on Dining? Beer samples are not the only thing served here. Area restaurants – from The Rumpus Room and Hinterland to COA and Devon Seafood Grill – are doing food pairings. A partial list of participating breweries: Lakefront, Sprecher, Milwaukee Brewing Company, Big Bay, Hinterland Brewing, O’so and Ale Asylum. Tickets (patrons must be at least 21): $40 in advance. Nondrinkers can buy a Food Lover’s Ticket for $20. Click here to buy advance tickets. June 16, 1-5 p.m.
Look for Dish on Dining on Tuesdays and Thursdays!
