Pastry of Champions
There is nothing – nothing I tell you! – like the healing powers of a buttery croissant. You can’t find a good one just anywhere in Milwaukee. But consider the baking case at the new Rocket Baby Bakery in Wauwatosa (6822 W. North Ave.). The flaky, tender, puffy specimens of baked goodness found there are certainly worth braving rush-hour morning traffic for. Owner Geoff Trenholme has a few other wonders in the case – baguettes, and recently, cheddar sourdough bread and roasted onion focaccia. Trenholme’s plans are to slowly expand to more offerings. Which – once I’ve licked my fingers clean a few more times – I will tell you about. Hours Mon-Sat 6 a.m.-2 p.m.
Yogurt World
In the city of Milwaukee, froyo fans await the openings of My Yo My! (100 S. Water St.) and Yo Factory (2203 N. Farwell Ave.). Meanwhile, an Orange Leaf froyo shop has opened in Waukesha. (There is another Wisconsin franchise of Oklahoma-based Orange Leaf – in Middleton.) The premise is similar to Tosa’s Yo Mama in that the yogurt flavors come out of self-serve dispensers. Yes, there’s a toppings bar, too. The cost is determined once you’ve had your order weighed. I’ve racked up some impressive froyo costs at places like this, but I digress… The hours: Sun-Sat 11 a.m.-11 p.m. (1190 W. Sunset Dr., Suite 110, Waukesha, 262-408-2423)
Baggo Donuts
You have a month, tops, to get a big or small bag of warm mini donuts from the “Calatrava of the East Side” Sil’s Drive-Thru (1801 E. North Ave.). The donut maker’s lease was not renewed. Has it really been nine years since Sil’s opened? Wow. At this rate, you ought to branch out and order a few other things on the menu – a hot dog, bagel with cream cheese, Arnold Palmer and a hot mocha. That should set you up for the day. After the April 29 closing, you can find Sil’s donuts at its other home – 7 Mile Fair. (And this summer, at a bunch of the ethnic festivals on the Summerfest grounds.) Open from 6 a.m. on weekdays, 7 a.m. on weekends.
