Class Act
Jefferson Street may be classier than it has ever been. On the same block as Louise’s Trattoria and the already classy Elsa’s is the new, very cute Classy Girl Cupcakes. Erica Elia and Sara Hanson offer traditional cupcakes in some 45 flavors in their shop with plum-colored walls and a cozy seating area. Some examples: carrot cake, chocolate chocolate chip, red velvet, cafe mocha and caramel delight. They also offer something a little different – specialty cheesecake cupcakes. Those creamy sweets come in flavors like banana split, original peanut butter cup, key lime, malted milkshake and white chocolate raspberry. If that’s not enough (and it’s really not!), these resourceful bakers sell cupcake-themed aprons, jewelry, greeting cards and other fun accessories. The cupcakes run $2 each. Check out the shop’s classy selection during these times: Mon-Thurs 8 a.m.-6 p.m.; Fri 8 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sat 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (825 N. Jefferson St., 414-270-1877; classygirlcupcakes.com)

Pre-Terminal Patty
When I was at General Mitchell International Airport a few weekends ago, I could have used a good burger. The hot-off-the-grill news is that Northpoint Custard is ready for your “killer quad” cravings. It might be just the thing to get through these days – and nights – of nose-numbing cold. As Bartolotta Restaurant Group’s John Wise aptly says, “You can get a burger at 4 a.m. if you want!” And people will want. Bartolotta is, of course, the company that created Northpoint, which has a seasonal location on Milwaukee’s lakefront. The airport restaurant offers burgers, a chicken breast sandwich, Nathan’s hot dog, grilled cheese, frozen custard and a breakfast menu, to boot. That ranges from an egg and cheese sandwich and chopped steak and eggs to waffles with vanilla custard. And since this joint is in the pre-security part of the lobby (near the House of Harley), you don’t have to be flying out to get the grub. Hours: breakfast menu served 4 a.m.-10 a.m.; all-day menu 10 a.m.-midnight.

Longer Cooking Time
A few weeks ago, the in-utero Zaafaran Restaurant was a topic featured in this column. At that point, the Thai-Indian fusion joint (780 N. Jefferson St., in the one-time Ed Debevic’s) was set to open on or around New Year’s Eve. However, some construction delays will postpone the debut to early in the new year.

The Best Gift
Are you looking to really make a food lover’s Christmas? The gift of gifts would be “A Day in the Kitchen” at Sanford Restaurant. The recipient is treated to a hands-on experience in the East Side restaurant’s kitchen – everything from wearing a Sanford chef’s jacket alongside the kitchen crew to participating in the dinner shift prep. The culmination of the day is dining – with a friend – on a tasting menu for two, and going home with a goody bag of remembrances from the experience. Cost: $500. Call Sanford to set up this most excellent gift: 414-276-9608. (1547 N. Jackson St.)
