An Oldie and a Goodie

Reverend Horton Heat Tuesday, Feb. 28: Heypenny with Antennas Up! at Club Garibaldi, 8 p.m. ($8) As a special early-week treat, Nashville’s own Heypenny pays Club Garibaldi a Tuesday night visit. Chaotic, irreverent, grimy, and just plain awesome, this electro-dirt alternative outfit takes on many shapes without caring what you think that shape is. It is a classic case of the kind of amazing music that is possible when a band completely lets go of convention and doesn’t take itself too seriously. (2501 S. Wednesday, Feb. 29: The Del Fuegos with Semi Twang at Turner Hall, 7 p.m. ($20)
The mid-week hits keep coming with the reunion tour of Boston-based garage rock legends The Del Fuegos. The band made a name for itself throughout the ‘80s with its charismatic live shows and angst-ridden and haunting melodies in songs like “Don’t Run Wild” and “I Still Want You.” Though the band landed a deal with Slash Records in 1984, lack of widespread commercial success and band tensions ultimately sunk The Del Fuegos before the turn of the decade. Thursday, March 1: Dave Alvin & The Guilty Ones with Sam Llanas at Shank Hall, 8 p.m. ($20)
Guitarist Dave Alvin is perhaps best known as a founding member of the influential roots rock group The Blasters. But it is his solo career—which has spanned two and a half decades and garnered him a Grammy for the brilliant Public Domain: Songs From the Wild Land—that stands apart and makes Alvin such a legend. Former BoDean Sam Llanas opens. (1434 N. Farwell Ave., shankhall.com)

MUSIC NOTES SHOW OF THE WEEK
Friday, March 2: Reverend Horton Heat with Larry & His Flask and Goddamn Gallows at Miramar Theatre, 9 p.m. ($20)
The reverend has been preaching the good word of the psychobilly stomp down since 1985. The holy man’s high-energy live set and raucous country-punk-tinged rockabilly sound are sure to send listeners straight to heaven. And when you think about it, $20 really isn’t too bad of a price for eternal salvation. (2844 N. Oakland Ave., themiramartheatre.com)

Saturday, March 3: Styx at Bradley Center, 7:30 p.m.
What’s cooler than watching dudes getting their faces bashed in at a minor league hockey game? Why, watching a Milwaukee Admirals game then having your own face bashed in by classic rockers Styx, of course! I wonder if they’ll bring out that t-shirt launching pirate ship when Styx encores with “Come Sail Away?” (1001 N. Fourth St., bradleycenter.com)

Also: Brief Candles with Gospel Gossip, Scrimshaw and Pony Trash at Cactus Club, 9:30 p.m.

Sunday, March 4: Juston Stens (Dr. Dog) with Miles Nielsen, The Rusted Hearts and Tim Schweiger & The Middlemen at Club Garibaldi, 8 p.m.
After spending the better part of six years drumming for influential pop-punk outfit Dr. Dog, Juston Stens decided to go it alone. Although this is not unheard of in the music industry, how he went about it is. Stens hopped on his 1972 Triumph motorcycle and cruised around the country, collaborating with old friends of his in different cities—including John Stirratt (Wilco), Jim Eno (Spoon) and Sue Bell (Bell and the Bees)—to record his debut album. Come see for yourself what all that highway time can do to a man and his music. (2501 S. Superior St., myspace.com/clubgaribaldis)

Also: VNV Nation with Straftanz at Turner Hall, 6:30 p.m. ($20)
(1032 N. Fourth St., pabsttheater.org)
