Braun Gone – For Now
Milwaukee’s sharp late-fall winds quickly spread the gossip. Ryan Braun’s Waterfront (102 N. Water St.) is closed – “temporarily,” according to the restaurant’s management. During this down period, the restaurant named for the Milwaukee Brewer will undergo “additional renovations.” The menu and staff will see some changes, as well, the management has indicated. I have an anecdote to share about Braun’s place. Driving through the Ward last Saturday night, I noticed that the restaurant was dark. It was Thanksgiving weekend. A sign attached to the door explained that the restaurant was closed for the weekend due to “lack of heat.” Hmm.

Ebb and Flow
A short phone powwow with Hans Weissgerber (of the Golden Mast and Seven Seas restaurant-owning family) confirmed that Rip Tide is closed (649 E. Erie St.). Weissgerber has sold the business and will concentrate on his Old German Beer Hall (1009 N. Old World Third St.) and business related to it. As for the new owners and their plans? That will be fodder for a future post.

Coming Soon
There are some buildings where you wonder about karma. East Town’s 780 N. Jefferson St. has been a Mexican place (Jordy’s, ages ago), Los Mitos (a short-lived restaurant from Il Mito’s Michael Feker) and Singha Thai. Singha was the most recent one to give up the ghost. The latest business to inhabit the space is Zaafaran, a Thai-Indian fusion restaurant slated to open at the end of the year. Once the opening date is firm, I’ll give you a holler.

Holiday Doings
Another week, another Friday night. Only it’s not just another Friday night. Not on Downer Avenue. The merchants on that East Side retail strip are throwing Festive Friday (that’s Dec. 3, 5-8 p.m.) Craft-making, free 10-minute massages and a canine dress-up contest are not your run-of-the-mill holiday offerings. The Downer restaurant brigade will also do its part to entice. At VIA Downer (2625 N. Downer Ave.), the appetizers will run half-price. They include fried ravioli, octopus ceviche, grilled calamari with salsa verde and arancini Menominee. VIA is also offering $3 warm spiced wine. Cafe Hollander (2608 N. Downer Ave.) is doing a free hot chocolate bar, along with a fire pit (cozy!) and all-you-can fish fry.… This weekend’s Christmas in the Ward is another reason to bundle up. The highlights of this yearly festival include horse-drawn carriage rides, live reindeer (yes, in the flesh) and – where there are reindeer, there must be – Santa Claus, available for photo ops in the outdoor Gingerbread House in Catalano Square (corner of Broadway and Menomonee). The square will also be the scene of a capella choirs, madrigal singers and Trinity Irish Dancers. Saturday’s bonus activity is “Taste and Stroll,” (11 a.m.-9 p.m.). For $30, you can buy five tickets redeemable for five small plates or “adult beverages” at certain bars and restaurants in the Ward. A few of the featured small plates: Cincinnati sloppy Lili (at Chili Lili’s), peppercorn-crusted tuna with mango chutney (at Swig), and Charlie slider with “sum’in sum’in” (at Club Charlies). Examples of featured cocktails: The Scrooged (served at The Wicked Hop), mini beer flight (at Hinterland Erie Street Gastropub) and champagne cocktail (at Cuvee). Event hours: Dec. 3, 5-8 p.m.; Dec. 4, from 11 a.m.
