“Escapist fun…” Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times
The 12 rounds “functions as a means to gauge how much is left to endure” Nathan Lee, The New York Times
Even though it’s produced by WWE studios and stars a professional wrestler, 12 Rounds is nothing like 2008’s The Wrestler. This action dud stars Cena as a New Orleans police detective who is forced to undergo a dozen tests and riddles from an escaped terrorist (“The Wire’s” Gillen) in order to get his girlfriend back and to stop impending disasters. It’d be better if Die Hard With a Vengeance didn&rsquot have the same plot and if the four-time World Champion’s acting chops were as strong as his muscles. Cena provides some intense action sequences, but his listless acting makes fellow wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson look like Robert De Niro.
