Local craft beer isn't easy to find at Summerfest, but Lakefront is providing plenty of rarities with its daily firkin tapping.

If you’re looking for unique beer options at Summerfest, head to the Lakefront Brewery area (on the south end just to the east of the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse) at 4 p.m. Each day the brewery is tapping a special firkin—a cask filled with fresh, lightly (if at all) carbonated beer.

The list of firkin options is intriguing. If you’re a Summerfest warrior and there from start to finish to try each one, more power to you. But here are four firkin highlights to mark on the calendar if you aren’t on the lakefront every day.

Friday, June 28: Pilsner with Grape Puree

A crisp pilsner is ideal for refreshment while walking the hot asphalt at Summerfest. The addition of grape ups that considerably. I’m guessing this will be a tasty thirst quencher.

Saturday, June 29: Whiskey Barrel-Aged Dark Lager

OK, so barrel-aged brews may not pair well with summer heat, but I’m intrigued by how this one has turned out. Eastside Dark Bavarian Dark Lager is the base beer. Its smooth, roasted malt flavor is a tasty choice for barrel aging.

Thursday, July 4: Mexican Ale with Pineapple and Raspberry

Happy Fourth of July! The citrus flavor of Citrica Mexican Ale — made with key lime puree and orange peel — is refreshing enough, but when you add pineapple and raspberry to the mix the beer becomes an ideal summer holiday treat.

Sunday, July 7: Wheat Ale with Nectarine and Apricot

A straightforward wheat beer is a good call on the lakefront. The addition of nectarines and apricots should provide a nice citrus finish. It’s a great way to end the revelry.
