RELATED: 5 Sandwiches You Have to Try in Milwaukee
1. Loup
7505 HARWOOD AVE., 414-988-0044
The newish storefront arm of Wisconsin Soup Co. (which heretofore sold its wares in grocery stores and farmers markets and online), this is a, ahem, souper spot to pick up a bowl of the hot daily soup or take home a frozen quart for later. Some particular faves of mine are the uber-rich lobster bisque and chunky veggie mulligatawny.
2. Soup Brothers
209 W. FLORIDA ST.
This quirky Walker’s Point walkup – Boo Boo’s big-brother restaurant – has turned soup into a craveable, stand-in-line-worthy experience. The soup you hear about most is the red pepper bisque, a smooth, achingly rich concoction that deserves its classic status. I’d also add the silky cheddar and Bermuda onion to your must-eat list. And that big hunk of poppyseed-crusted bread they give you? You will destroy it.
3. Amaranth Bakery
3329 W. LISBON AVE., 414-934-0587
The breads made with heritage, whole-grain flours are what this storefront bakery is known for. And don’t get me started on the glorious pastries and cookies they make here. The same care goes into the rotating roster of soups, which include coconut lentil curry, mushroom pozole, New England fish chowder, and shrimp and sausage gumbo.
